In 1919 Sunni Muslims started the movement with the support of Gandhiji called the "Khilafat Movement" to fight against the Ottoman Empire (14th to early 20th century) and Filed Marshal Mustafa Kamal Ataturk become president of secular Turkey. Also, Greece took independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830, and in 1923 they exchanged Muslim and Christian populations. In reality, Gandhiji intended to have support Muslims to Indian National Congress to counter the Muslim league. 

Now Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the 12th President of Turkey since 2014 and now he called himself as Khalifa Of the Ottoman Empire. These led him to convert 1500 years old church, Hagia Sophia, into Mosque and sometimes with the name of Muslim giving a statement on the Kashmir issue to support Pakistan.

What was the reason behind recent tensions?

The main reason behind the dispute is the Mediterranean sea to take control of it as a superpower in this region Because this region is full of Natural Gas and both countries wanted to take control over it. These gas reserves also eye by many countries. These vast reserves should bring these countries together to tap and share the riches of their shores such as Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Egypt, Italy, jorden and also Palestinians. 

It was started in July because turkey announced a naval alerted to a drilling survey sent its ship near Greece Island with two warships. For security concerns, Greece started its patrolling near its territory and notify that warship of turkey cannot enter its territory even though turkey started drilling this is another cause of tension between the two countries. Also, Erdoğan said that he won't accept the Map. Also, Turkey singed maritime boundaries deal with Libya amid an explosion row south turkey to North Libya exclusive zone, and on 6th August Greece and Egypt signed deal own economic zone. After this deal, both zones overlap each other.

Greece and Turkey member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization 1949) with 30 member countries European Union and America. Also, as responsible member America simply commented on the dispute to resolve it. But Germany came to resolve the issue and sent Foreign Minister Heiko Maas Athens and Ankara and warned, "Any small spark lead to huge disaster".Also, France doesn't support turkey and sent fighter jets, warships, and currently holding exercise with Greece, Cyprus, and Italy.  

Now Germany currently holds rotating chairmanship European Council and setting assembly EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said that the sanctions which include assets freeze and travel ban could be extended. Also Economic section possible. But the major thing is nearly 3 million Turks living in Germany.

In reality, Turkey wanted to increase its region in the Mediterranean sea. Also, Donald Trump didn't comment on the issue because America didn't get help from turkey to control Syria terrorists. Also, Trump's Government change the mind to deal with Turkey to give F-35 fighter planes but in counter, turkey bought surface to air missiles from Russia. 

Turkey has many Issues with many Muslim countries such as UAE Israel Deal. Last turkey tends to change geopolitics in middle east Muslim countries.
