Small level clashes happened many times when both country parts of the USSR, but as the USSR becomes weak after 1985-86, In February 1988, the Nagorno Karabakh assembly passed a resolution for the unification of the predominantly ethnic Armenian territory. The Armenian in Nagorno Karabakh called several times to Armenian authority to control in this region. 

In 1991 after the Soviet collapse Nagorno Karabakh announced themselves as an independent region, but the world didn't recognize. In 1992 the war began for the next 2 years in the area. On a religious basis, the war was begun for the next 2 years in 1994 Russia reconciled peace treaty between two nations.

From an economic place, the mountain Nagorno Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan However, the Armenian supporter troops and the Azerbaijan troops fight went on. Also, Armenia has good relations with Russia and has a Russian military base. Also, Vladimir Putin called it a ceasefire. If Russia involves a dispute with turkey, so NATO alliance, according to article 5 will activate and bring the whole of Europe and the USA into War.

India has good relations with both countries also India's ambitious project to make a railway line Russia to Iran Chabahar port to Mumbai port and this route passes through Azerbaijan. Also, Armenia stands with India on the Kashmir issue.
